Shifting from the raw brutality of basic training to the dehumanising effects of combat, Full Metal Jacket deftly combines nonstop action with scathing dark humour. Grain texturing is light-moderate and mostly organic looking, but there is at least one shot where it’s obvious that some digital manipulation has been done. The black level is solid and seems so much deeper than ever before, and bright daytime scenes look just stunning. the late director's preferred policy of no black bars as his films were routinely shot "safe" for 4x3.

Despite its relatively short running-time (the film clocks in at 116 minutes), the pacing is very methodical and precise, often lingering on characters as they react to the horrors around them.Pyle goes through such an intense time, that D'Onofrio transforms into something unrecognizable from when his character is first introduced with a smile that he can't seem to remove.
