Description

After a run-in with a local tomcat who gives him a severe beating, he's rescued by Jennie, a bone-thin, scrawny but sweet-tempered tabby cat. Meeting various journeys and encounters along the way, Jennie and with her pal Peter face the ups and downs of survival and being stray. And she can't even witness it, she has to remain hidden until the victor comes to claim her and she must go with that victor. Gallico's best book about cats is still The Silent Miaow, but this one I can recommend for the fabulous northbound voyage of the Glasgow Queen, when Peter and Jenny sign on as ship's cats. The most impressive thing about this story was the wonderful passages of Peter learning to be a cat - how to lick himself, how to move through the world as a cat, how to fight as one.

Adopted by a sweet, knowledgeable tabby named Jennie, he learns how to survive as a homeless stray, travels to Glasgow and back, and blossoms into a big, strong cat under her intense loving care. A couple of weeks ago, an author friend quizzed me about my favorite Star Trek and Star Trek Next Generation episodes. Inevitably, he awakens on board from his 25-minute coma to find the terrible and beautiful memories of the past forty years were caused by a special mental probe of sorts from an extinct people. It is just as fresh now as when I first read it, and in spite of the passing years, still tugs at the heart-strings. Adventures wait around every corner for the two new friends, as Jennie teaches Peter all about life as a cat. He had twenty three cats at home and it looks like that gave him a lot of opportunities to observe cats and their ways. The author is American, the book was first published in 1950 and contains a couple of race-related terms which nowadays would be considered inappropriate. He tells amazing stories, and I very much enjoyed this one about a little boy who turned into a cat.

Towards the end of the book, I thought that something heartbreaking would happen - either Peter or Jennie would die, or Peter would become a human being again and that would be the end of their friendship. The ending was by far the most excruciating pain I've ever been in, it was utterly sad and I cannot find a book which can make me weep so much as this one has. spine unfaded with all text and illus present, some corner wear and loss, at most 1cm on two corners. He retired from sports writing after selling a short story to a movie company in 1936 (probably "Wedding Present") and devoted himself to fiction writing thereafter.
