I stayed at The Old Skool near Coed-y-Brenin, North Wales on the MTB Yoga weekend. Sian and Dafydd Roberts spent over three years converting and extending the building to turn it into comfortable accommodation for outdoors enthusiasts. There are five twin en-suite rooms, a large lounge, dining room, sun room, secure bike storage, and bike wash. The Coed y Brenin trails can be ridden straight from the door and other trail centres such as Penmachno, Betws-y-Coed and Antur Stiniog are nearby. See my Coed-y-Brenin mash up report for route ideas that start a few minutes away from the Old Skool.
Sian and Dafydd are famous in the mountain bike world for running the original cafe at Coed y Brenin in the late 90s. This was the original Welsh trail centre and existed before Llandedgla, Penmachno, Antur Stiniog, Nantyarian or the south Wales trails like Afan, Cwm Carn and Brechfa.
Back then the cafe was on the other side of the road, the long route was called the Karrimor trail (rhymes with Michael Barrymore) and the trails had a few gnarly sections that have since been removed.
Sian and Dafydd are probably the most enthusiastic hosts you will encounter. They’re still into cycling and running and seem to know everyone in the mountain biking world.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in north Wales then this has my recommendation!
