Description

There was much in "Aspergirls" that I could relate to, and it was interesting to see the experience of having Aspergers from the perspectives of others. However, there were many instances where I felt that the author was making generalisations based on her own personal experience that were not necessarily relevant to other women on the spectrum.

There is a good deal of pseudoscience, which is okay to even mildly interesting; but the language around the pseudoscience was matter-of-fact more often than it offered a precursor of "according to [insert person and/or text here];” and some of the interview community input was hollow or didn't offer any viable "evidence" to the claim either. We really felt the "Harvard Guide" had let us down here. There we were -- left not knowing what my partner's diagnosis was -- even though clearly there had to be something! Even if they think I’l lying about how my Classmates saying I’m the worst one in our class even though technically they are WAY more destructive than I am, and I’m not exaggerating much TM: Yeah I do for sure. I think that culturally that females are expected, they have certain expectations on then more so than males do. And I think that makes it much more challenging for them to try and fit in. And if they don’t feel like they don’t want to look like how society wants them a woman to look that there might be something wrong with them, as they’ve told me.

I ESPECIALLY recommend this book to mothers of autistic children. I suspect that many of us actually have undiagnosed AS and reading this book really highlights the similarities I share with my children and helped me better understand and empathize with them. She does state that psychic sensitivity [in Autistic folks?] hasn't been proven by science yet, but most of the language / phrasing she uses is matter-of-fact.

Much of the book was oriented towards the parents of girls with Aspergers. This had no relevance to me whatsoever. I also found most of the advice proffered to be not particularly helpful. Whether it's because of the author's own views of gender identity or because of the time in which it was written, this just does not make sense to me, reading these words in 2019. I confirmed that I’m no premature kid. I was born 9 months like a normal kid, I was actually better when I was a kid than now. HR:Thank you so much Tania, keep up the great work you do for so many, you’re an inspiration and we look forward to working with you. I found the book useful, but I have to concede that the book is overwhelmingly targeting Asperger's Syndrome, not other folk on the Autism Spectrum. My daughter is a high functioning autistic girl, and has many challenges that differ from AS. And yet the common ground was useful, evidenced by having discussions with my wife on various statements made.Theory of Mind deficit IS cognitive empathy deficit. This implies a deficit of empathy. Theory of Mind deficit is characterized as an inability to innately understand that others have their own emotional states, intentions, motivations. I believe that this is a large part of why we have difficulty getting along with others. If someone is smiling and saying one thing but psychically we are hearing something completely different, we will get confused and want to run away. This often conflicts with appearances and what others tell me, causing me to doubt my own intuition. I usually turn out to be right. A more cynical person might call it a self-fulfilling prophecy. The misperception of this sensitivity is that we are hard to get along with...paranoid" (40). (I normally wouldn't reproduce this much text from a book, but in this case I wanted to provide as much context as is given in the book.)
